After weeks or months of practice, you&#8217;ve finally earned the privilege of driving independently. As a driving instructor, I enjoy seeing my students celebrate this achievement because I know how much hard work it takes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, I also remind every new driver of one important fact: <strong>passing your driving test doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;ve mastered driving.<\/strong> It simply means you&#8217;ve demonstrated the minimum skills required to drive safely on Ontario&#8217;s roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, one of the greatest dangers I see isn&#8217;t nervous beginners\u2014it&#8217;s new drivers who become overconfident shortly after passing their test. Confidence is essential behind the wheel, but overconfidence can quickly lead to risky habits, poor decisions, and preventable collisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s look at why this happens and how you can avoid it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Overconfidence Develops<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you first receive your licence, every drive feels exciting. Without an instructor or examiner beside you, it&#8217;s easy to feel like you&#8217;ve &#8220;made it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many new drivers begin thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m a good driver now.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Nothing bad will happen.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;ve got this figured out.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While confidence is healthy, believing you no longer need to improve is where problems begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving is a skill that develops over years\u2014not weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experienced drivers continue learning every day because every road, weather condition, and traffic situation is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Common Bad Habits New Drivers Develop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Speed Slowly Starts Increasing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the first habits I notice after students become licensed is speed creeping above the posted limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It rarely happens intentionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drivers become comfortable with the road and gradually increase speed without realizing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even driving 10\u201315 km\/h over the speed limit reduces reaction time and increases stopping distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The speed limit isn&#8217;t a target\u2014it&#8217;s the maximum safe speed under ideal conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.
